Updates on Artist Housing in Woodridge and Brookland

I missed it a couple of weeks ago, but the Post ran a piece on artist housing in DC, featuring the Douglass Street project I mentioned back in July. The application process will likely open up again in the spring, and I'll post the info here if I catch it in time. Overall, a good article, if you just strike the following:

The biggest downside of the Douglass Street project is its location. While Mather Studios is in the heart of downtown, the Douglass [sic] Street project is in Northeast, near New York Avenue.

God forbid. Seriously, who wants to live near the Arboretum, the Gateway Arts District in Maryland, or Abdo's forthcoming Arbor Place? Oh, maybe it's not that bad....


But I digress. Artspace's Dance Place Project is gathering steam, with construction estimated to start in early 2008:

Artspace will develop a mixed-used project that will include 30 to 40 affordable live/work units for artists and a new home for Dance Place, a nonprofit organization that operates a dance company, a school, and a variety of children's programs. Two existing buildings on the site will be torn down to make way for the project.

Douglas Street Artist Housing in Woodridge - Applications Now Available

From Cultural Development Corporation's (CuDC) projects in development:

CuDC has partnered with Manna, Inc., to develop approximately 40 affordable work/live housing units for artists and their families at 2414 Douglas Street, NE, in the Woodridge area of Washington, DC. The intent of this project is to create work/live artist housing — units designed primarily as functional studio space with basic living space as an ancillary use. The renovation of an existing warehouse plus new construction will provide units ranging from approximately 700 to 1,050 sq. ft., in addition to 1,390 sq. ft. of flexible space for communal arts activities. To maximize artist eligibility, units will be available at two price points suitable for a range of low- and moderate-income households as defined by DC’s Department of Housing and Community Development. CuDC and Manna anticipate that units for low-income households will be priced starting in the mid-$100Ks. Units for moderate-income households will be priced starting in the mid-$200Ks. Please see page two for income limits.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2008, with occupancy expected in 2009.

CuDC will start accepting applications on Monday, June 4, 2007 at 9 a.m. All applications are due to CuDC no later than 5 p.m., Thursday, August 9, 2007. Mail is typically delivered to CuDC at 3:30 pm; all applications received in the mail will be date and time stamped at that point. We will be accepting applications until August 9, 2007 at 5 p.m. Subject to acceptance of the application and completion of the supporting documentation, eligible artists will have access to purchasing a work/live condominium in the Douglas Street project on a first-come/first-served basis.

The Mount Rainier Day Festival will be in the 3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue, 11am-6pm

· Parade starts at 12:30 and will march down 34th St from St. Johns Church to the Traffic Circle and then down to Otis and back up 37th St. Northwestern High School Band will be in the parade in addition to the Rolling Crest Community Center Pom Dance Team.

· Many of the city’s artists will be performing this year, including a salsa band and dance group from Joe’s Movement Emporium. There will also be self-guided walking studio tours throughout the entire Gateway Arts District from Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood and Hyattsville.

"Wired to the Elements" Opening Reception at Roxanne's Artiques - Friday, May 11th

The unique colors and forms of nature come alive in "Wired to The Elements," a joint exhibition with area artists and Trinidad and Tobago nationals Garth Gardner and Floyd Roberts. Their work is on display Friday, May 11th through June 16th at Roxanne’s Artiques & Gallery, 3426 9th Street, NE. A reception for Gardner and Roberts will be held on Friday, May 11th, 2007, 6-8pm.

Gardner’s paintings, called "The Elements," are swirling bursts of color in complex patterns only seen in nature. Painted with acrylic on wood, "The work is not abstract; rather it captures the abstractions created by nature itself," says Gardner, who has a Ph.D. in Art Education.

Trained in fine arts, Gardner began creating art using the computer in the mid-1990s. His images have been exhibited at various museums and galleries nationally and internationally, including the Paterson Museum in New Jersey, the Atlantic Gallery in New York, and the Nanjing College of Art in China.

Internationally recognized Floyd Roberts moved to the United States at age 13. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the Corcoran School of Art in 1984. His pieces include sculpture in metal, wood, stone, clay and mixed media. Roberts’ work has been on display at numerous exhibitions including Glenview Mansion Art Gallery, Art Spin Gallery, and Strathmore Hall Art Center, all in Maryland.

Artspace to Launch Artist Survey for Dance Place Arts and Housing Project - Public Meeting, Thursday, May 10th

This would be fabulous if it comes to fruition!

What: Dance Place has an opportunity to consider redeveloping its facility, along with adjacent property owners, into a multi-story complex by partnering with Artspace Projects, a national nonprofit developer of affordable space for the arts, and Epstein Financial Organization. The complex would house the Dance Place campus, low cost artist lofts, and market rate condominiums.

Artists from Washington and the surrounding area are encouraged to attend a public meeting at Dance Place that will formally launch an on-line survey of artists space needs in the Washington area. Refreshments will be provided. Without your input, and without your help in getting the word out about this survey, we can't make the project a reality.

Calvin Coleman, II Artist Reception at Adobe Design Center - Sunday, April 22nd

Visual artist Calvin Coleman, II will display his works and talk to guests at the Adobe Design Center, located at 606-C Rhode Island Avenue NE (near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station, above Flash Glass), on Sunday, April 22th, 2007 from 2pm to 4:30pm. DCist Exposed Photography Show - Opening Reception Friday, March 9th

I'm honored to be a part of the first DCist Exposed Photography Show; additionally, thanks to Amanda of Creative DC for the plug!

DCist.com is pleased to announce our first ever DCist Exposed Photography Show at the Warehouse Arts Complex from March 9 -16, 2007. More than 35 local photographers, both amateur and professional, were chosen out of over 200 who submitted their work for the show through the DCist Flickr site. Every day DCist.com selects photos from this user-generated photo pool to use in its daily coverage of local news, arts and entertainment, politics, food and sports.

The exhibit will showcase new talent as they reveal the city to us through the eyes of people who live and work in the D.C. metro area. In a city too often seen purely as a collection of federal government buildings or a destination for tourists, these photographers capture the local music, art, architecture, and urban surroundings that give Washington, D.C. its unique cultural vibrancy.

Art Enables' Housewarming Holiday Party - Sunday, December 3rd

Art Enables - Outsider Art Inside the Beltway has moved into a new space at 411 New York Avenue, NE. This Sunday, December 3rd, 2006 from 2-6pm, they are hosting a housewarming and holiday party entitled "Raising the Roof & the Rent."

Art Enables is an arts-and-enterprise program for adults with developmental and/or mental disabilities from throughout the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.

Participants in Art Enables are selected for their interest in drawing, painting and color. They come to the studio on scheduled days to work under the guidance of professional artist-instructors creating and marketing their own outsider and folk art. Their artwork is exhibited and sold in shows at the studio, via retailers around the city and at galleries, markets and special events throughout the region.

The program is open to adults with developmental and/or mental disabilities who are enthusiastic about working toward becoming professional artists and who are willing and able to focus on their work for a full studio day.

Art Enables demonstrates that the visual arts are an effective training and employment tool for people who may have barriers to cognitive-based training systems but who are interested in drawing and painting. Their ability to express themselves through visual images can operate as the basis on which they build skills and capabilities, become integrated in the community and earn money. More importantly, they experience a growth in confidence and self-esteem as the natural and inevitable result of becoming achievers at something they do well.

BROOKLAND COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP

What: In cooperation with CUA and the DC Department of Public Works' Helping Hand Program, the Brookland CDC is sponsoring a community clean-up in anticipation of the grand opening of Yes! Organic Market (I do not know the exact opening date yet). All tools and trash bags are being supplied through DPW.

When: Saturday, November 11th, 9am-12pm. The clean-up will be followed by a complimentary buffet lunch for all volunteers at the new Cardinal Club, 3514 12th Street, NE.

Where: The clean-up will begin at 12th and Michigan, then travel south along 12th Street picking up trash and cleaning out the tree boxes and planters through Monroe.

CHILDREN'S BOOK SIGNING AND ART EXHIBIT AT ROXANNE'S ARTIQUES

From the press release:

Roxanne’s ARTiques, located at 3426 9th Street NE, on Historic Brookland’s Gallery Row, across the street from the neighborhood landmark Colonel Brooks Tavern, will be showing art produced by the young students of the Harlem School of the Arts. The show features illustrations included in the children's book, Kara Finds Sunshine on a Rainy Day.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2006, from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm, featuring a book signing by author Caroline Brewer. On Saturday, November 11, 2006, from 1:00pm - 3:00pm, there will be a reading accompanied by music, and a book signing afterwards. The show will be displayed through Sunday November 12, 2006 [I have also heard the show will be on display through November 19th].

Kara Finds Sunshine on a Rainy Day is no ordinary book! All of the illustrations were produced by children, some as young as six years old, by students attending the prestigious Harlem School of the Arts in New York City and the Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey school system. The students created ceramics, pastel drawings, and collages in the style of Romare Bearden.

According to Brewer, "The theme of Kara Finds Sunshine on a Rainy Day is that the sun is always shining even when we can't see it. It's a book of hope and healing for all ages." Readers are introduced to courageous and inspirational historical figures, such as Rosa Parks, Anne Frank, Sitting Bull, Kim Phuc, Cesar Chavez, A. Phillip Randolph, and Mahatma Gandhi. A teacher/parent guide is included to help adults discuss with children coping with life's joys and pains.

Proceeds from sales of the book are being directed to book donations to Gulf Coast families disrupted by Hurricane Katrina.

Roxanne’s ARTiques is owned by Roxanne Carter, a long-time resident of Michigan Park in Greater Brookland. The gallery features artifacts and works of art by national and international artists. The Gallery is open from 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, and is located one block from the Brookland/CUA Metro station on the Red Line. "Night on Ninth" Gallery Receptions - Thursday, July 20th

Roxanne’s ARTiques, located at 3426 9th Street NE, on Historic Brookland’s Gallery Row, across the street from the neighborhood landmark Colonel Brooks Tavern, will feature original photographs by six Washington-area photographers. The show features photographs and manipulated images of summer, including children at play, bridges and alleys, fireworks, flowers, and other scenes.

The photographers represented in the show are Ted Austin, Melissa Covington, Gloria Kirk, Otis Motley, Kelly Perl, Ph.D., and Leonard Tate. An opening reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 20th.

Ted Austin owns Pro Photo Images, a full service photography studio, including complete digital imaging facilities, in the Takoma neighborhood in Washington, DC. Over his career, he has gravitated towards fine arts photography and now, after further study and experimentation, digital imaging.

A retired teacher and photographer for a federal government agency, Mr. Austin teaches at his studio and for the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. His work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions. As a retired teacher and educator, Austin prefers photography, saying that "A bad day in the darkroom is better than a good day in the classroom, although now, instead of eight hours in the darkroom, it's eight hours at the computer."

Melissa Covington, a speech-language pathologist, took up photography in 1995, and is a partner in Beyond Photography. She prefers to shoot odd architectural angles, unusual objects, and scenes in nature.

Gloria Kirk is a native Washingtonian. While focusing today on photographing vintage vehicles and creating conceptual photographic art, Ms. Kirk's photography includes weddings, photojournalism, portraits, architectcure, and abstracts. She has had work published in various media, and has exhibited in galleries in the U.S., Africa, and Cuba.

Otis Motley is a freelance and press photographer, specializing in portraits, news, sports, dances, weddings, and special events, and travel. A graduate of the New York Institute of Photographer, his assignments have included Hoops for the Homeless, Cherry Blossom Festivals, Fourth of July Celebrations, and activities in Germany including the Michael Jackson concert tour in 1997 and President Clinton visiting U.S. troops.

Kelly Perl lives in the the Brookland neighborhood in Washington. She has photographed a wide variety of New York City landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge, the now abandoned Bethelehem Steel Works in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Her work in the show can be described as "industrial pastoral," juxtaposing industrial subjects and infrastructure with nature.

Leonard Tate was born in Detroit, Michigan and works as a psychologist in Virginia. His photographic eye captures people, nature, and odd and weird objects. He is also a partner in Beyond Photography.

The "Summertime: Six Photographers" show will be displayed from Thursday, July 20th through Thursday August, 31st. A closing reception will be held on Thursday, August 31st, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Roxanne’s ARTiques is owned by Roxanne Carter, a long-time resident of the Michigan Park neighborhood in Greater Brookland, in the northeast quadrant of Washington, D.C. The gallery features artifacts and works of art by national and international artists. The Gallery is open from 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, and is located one block from the Brookland/CUA red line Metro subway station.
