Potomac River Watershed Clean Up Tomorrow - Rain or Shine

We predict rain, but don't let that stop you. You'd just get wet and dirty anyhow.

While on the them of the great outdoors, find some worn out clothes, you know, the ones you can't even try to get rid of at the yard sale, and join the Alice Ferguson Foundation 20th Annual Potomac River Watershed Clean-up.

There are a number of sites but if you want to stick close to home, try the L Street NE clean up (contact Merrit Drucker, NoMa Business Improvement District, 202-722-6716) or Anacostia Park (contact Allison Moller, Email, Southeast White House). Directions are included on the main site.

NE DC Historical Society Meeting: H Street and the History of the Uline Arena - Sunday, July 8th

What: Join the NE DC Historical Society as they continue to explore the history of our Northeast Washington communities - past, present, and in years to come. This month the community focus will be an encore presentation on H Street NE, including the "History of the Uline Arena" by Richard Layman.

When: Sunday, July 8th, 2007, 2-4pm

Our meeting will include our ongoing study of the Rhode Island Avenue Corridor. Speakers will include Dr. Jean Pablo, president of the Tenleytown Historical Society, sharing with us how to do an analysis of the historical and architectural significance of the Rhode Island Avenue Corridor; and Bill Rice, community historian, sharing with us interesting facts of relevance to the history of our city. The meeting location will be the headquarters of the Premier Community Development Corporation at 1309 Rhode Island Avenue, NE, Suite B, in the Brentwood Shopping Plaza.

What: Join the NE DC Historical Society as they continue to explore the history of our Northeast Washington communities - past, present, and in years to come. This month the community focus will be "The Rhode Island Avenue Corridor." The host will be the Premier Community Development Corporation with Hazel Thomas, Chairperson.

When: Sunday, June 10th, 2007, 2-4pm

Where: Saint Francis De Sales School, 2019 Rhode Island Avenue, NE

Presentations will include:
· "The Future of the Rhode Island Avenue Corridor and The History and Status of Voting in DC" by Harry Thomas, Jr., Ward 5 Councilmember

· "The Present Status of the Rhode Island Avenue Business Corridor" by Beyla Adero, Proprietor of Nature's Rhythm.

· "An Open Community Share of Your Reminiscences on the Businesses along the Rhode Island Avenue Corridor", including parishioners and friends of St. Francis de Sales Church. Everyone, of course, is welcome to come and share their memories!

What: Join the NE DC Historical Society as they continue to explore the history of our Northeast Washington communities - past, present, and in years to come. This month the community focus will be the greater H Street neighborhood.

When: Sunday, May 20th, 2007, 2-4pm

Where: Laboratory 1 of The Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H Street, NE

Presentations will include:
· "An Overview of the History of the Greater H Street Neighborhood", by neighborhood preservationists Richard Layman or Nancy Schwartz.

· "The Swampoodle Neighborhood" by Kathleen Lane. The Swampoodle neighborhood was located in what is today the Union Station railyard. Some of Ms. Lane's ancestors lived in Swampoodle and then relocated onto H Street after the neighborhood was razed. She wrote her master's thesis on the neighborhood.

· "The History of Union Station" by Bill Wright. Mr. Wright is writing his dissertation on the history of this great railroad station, which opened in 1907 and has experienced decline and rebirth in the 100 years since.

Other presentations will include Father Carl Dianda of the Saint Francis De Sales Church speaking on his "Reminiscences on the Businesses of Woodridge," and Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr. on "The History of DC Voting and African American History in Ward 5."

Where: The Orelia Ledbetter Room of the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 5301 North Capitol Street, NE (at the corner North Capitol and Riggs Road)

Presentations will include: The focus for this session will be the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, a beacon of light to the communities of Riggs Park, Lamond-Riggs, Fort Totten, Chillum, the South Manor community of Manor Park, and voting precinct 65. Plymouth Congregational's rich history dates back to 1881. So join us as Mrs. Orelia Ledbetter, longtime member and wife of Plymouth's departed pastor emeritus, acquaints us with this thriving and nurturing religious and community organization impacting youths through senior citizens.

Argonaut Benefit TONIGHT for Quike Morales

I've been following the story of Luis "Quike" Morales at Frozen Tropics. After leaving work at the Argonaut Tavern, Morales was shot in the head outside his girlfriend's home in the 600 block of 14th Place NE at 5:30am September 30th. The Argonaut, at 1433 H Street NE, is hosting a benefit tonight, starting at 7pm, with a silent auction and DJ in an effort to raise money to aid Morales and his family during his recovery. My prayers go out to them during this difficult time.
